"This was filmed during August 2011. This is my interpretation of the fjord landscape in western Norway. Having spent countless days here, I really enjoy even the smallest parts of this landscape. Like hidden streams or dwarfish waterfalls outside of the beaten track that offer a great deal of solitude.

This movie was editing "on the road" and uploaded over 3G network from southeast asia. I have decided to spend the next two years creating a 60min blu-ray/dvd. As a landscape photographer, I have visited some really amazing places over the years, and now I will be revisiting many of them for this movie. It is a full-on project, and as a result I have now sold my apartment, print-studio, car and other belongings. I hope to be able to continue releasing a new video on vimeo every second month or so. If everything goes as planned, the next movie should be from Mountain Everest.

I thought Beethoven´s Moonlight Sonata would be appropriate, and asked my friend Marika Takeuchi if she could record it in a studio. She made a fantastic version which I love very much. Thank you!"

Singapore celebrates its 46th National Day tomorrow. Besides the traditional National Day Parade on Aug 9, a month-long celebrations are taking place at various community and public venues to commemorate this important occasion.

Yesterday, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra was performing at the Singapore Botanic Gardens' Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage to commemorate this day with a string of familiar tunes of our national songs.

Installation Art: Life after Death

Placed at the entrance to the galleries of the Asian Civilisations Museum, this work by Justin Lee transports visitors into a dream-like night scene.

Accompanying the special exhibition Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor & His Legacy, this contemporary installation is on display from 08 Jun 2011 - 30 Oct 2011 @ Shaw Foundation Foyer, ACM Empress Place.

Stylish terracotta army flanked by graceful fairy-like maidens armed with modern technologies. This work blends Western pop art with traditional Eastern imagery, giving rise to a new reading of a work that is a mix of many cultures, and thus decidedly Singaporean.

The artist's playful use of color and light suggests that life after death might not be so bad after all.

Last Friday evening, i made a trip to the Asian Civilizations Museum to see a special exhibition, Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor and His Legacy.This is the first exhibition of the actual terracotta warriors held in Singapore, as well as the first presentation in Southeast Asia. The exhibition will be held till 16 Oct 2011 @ Special Exhibitions Gallery, ACM Empress Place. Admission is $8 for this special exhibition, however, there's a special discounted price on Friday evenings (7-9pm) at $4.

This exhibition offers us a glimpse of the huge terracotta army buried near the tomb of the First Emperor of China, his life and influence on later burials.

At the entrance of the special gallery, there's a long model made of fiberglass, showcasing the terracotta warrior and horse production.

The model shows the division of labor required to create the terracotta figures. Many workers were needed, and detailed planning, close coordination and strict supervision were essential. Did you notice one worker being punished?

From the marks on the figures, it seems that palace as well as private workshops made the figures. Moulds helped speed the process and ensure figures were similar in size. However, variation was necessary to create a more realistic arm: countless hairstyles can be seen on the warriors. figures made by the artists from the palace factories show better workmanship. But the private potters were more adept at representing facial traits of people from different regions.

Last evening, i went to watch this dance drama: Thousand-Hands Bodhisattva by the Taiyuan Dance Troupe at the Esplanade Theatre.

President Nathan was the Guest Of Honor. Last nite's program is part of the Presidential Challenge Charity Event 2011. Net proceeds will go to the appointed beneficiaries under President's Challenge 2011.

The stage design and effects were spectacular, coupled with the artistic choreography and excellent performance put up by the dancers.

At the end of the performance, President Nathan was invited on stage to present tokens of appreciation to sponsors and the Troupe also presented a statue of the Bodhisattva to him.

我突然“醒悟”，觉得不能／不要做一个“要求多多，什么都投诉，无法忍受一点不便”的新加坡人，尤其是在总理面前。

当了一辈子新闻工作者，除了访问过前外交部长杨荣文，从未（有机会）遇见其他政府高官。

那天终于有机会和总理李显龙近距离接触，是在飞机上。总理一家人就坐在我旁边。兴奋的我像个小影迷，前去打招呼要求合照，总理亲切答应，让我high上十万八千里的高空。

之前就已经听说总理李显龙毫无架子，出国私游不要求特别待遇。有同行去日本，说总理伉俪和他一样“屈就”在经济舱，我难以置信。日理万机的一国之首六个半小时飞东京乘搭经济舱，不知道有多少其他国家元首会如此俭朴，因为这不是有失身份，而是不可思议。

这次机遇总理是在行程较远的欧洲航班商务舱内，我很肯定新航必定可随时将总理一行人升级到头等舱，让总理一家飞得更舒服点，但总理在飞机上“平民化”得没有引起任何骚动，他们登机后什么要求都没有，与一般乘客无异，几乎是无人察觉。
这必定是一种品格／品德上的最高境界。当你已经“抵达”，你不会将身份地位不停刻在脑海中，或因此觉得高人一等。你不会再那么计较琐碎事，不会因为一些无关痛痒的小事发火生气，更不会总是将“你懂不懂我是谁？”挂在嘴边，因为已经不是普通人。

登机前其实我满肚子火，事关飞机延误了两小时，加上在机场处理免税事务的工作人员发出不明确指示，害我跑上跑下拿不到钱气到头痛。而之前新航搞砸了我的座位，累我和友伴在飞机上无法并肩而坐，再添火气。

我之前为了飞机座位安排失误一事，老远从斯洛文尼亚（Slovenia）拨长途电话联络新航客户部门，要他们无论如何搞定失误以安抚我心，还电邮痛斥有关部门办事不周，并发简讯给新航公关投诉，忙得不可开交，搞到半夜两点还火气猛到无法入眠。
新航表示唯一能做的，是登机后尝试问友伴旁边的乘客是否愿意换位。我当时的反应是理直气壮的“一定要”。不过我和友伴后来什么都没做，因为坐在友伴周围的就是总理一家人。叫总理家人为了我无关紧要的方便／喜好而换位？就算我真的要／敢要，我也想不出要用什么语气，给什么理由，怎么问。

我相信若我真的要求，总理不会介意他的儿子与我换位，因为这实在是芝麻小事，但我实在问不出口，我突然“醒悟”，觉得不能／不要做一个“要求多多，什么都投诉，无法忍受一点不便”的新加坡人，尤其是在总理面前。

想想，这一切其实没有必要。若真的要算，生活中有太多不如意，与其怨声载道，不如欢容一点，虽然怎样开怀／积极／坦然面对，是很高深的学问。

还好这次坐在友伴旁边的是总理李显龙一家人，是他们的修养和气度压制了我原本几乎不受控制，差点无法平息的波动情绪。

DIY Painting

Ever since i left secondary school, i have not painted at all but lately, my interest in painting has been reignited. It all started with a piece of DIY Painting Kit (paint by number), given to me by my niece. i started painting and in no time, had fallen in love with painting all over again! It's therapeutic and enjoyable. i derived a sense of achievement and satisfaction from my completed work of art.

Despite the fact that i have not been painting for decades, i have no difficulty in picking up the art again, as the painting kit comes with a ready drawn canvas with areas labeled in numbers; a set of brushes and paints labeled with corresponding numbers. All i did was to fill in the numbered areas on the canvas with colors of matching numbers.

This is my finished work.

For sure, this will not be my last piece of painting, as my friend has already ordered from my niece, another piece of the DIY painting kit in another category and requested me to help her do the painting. This is because she has shaky hands.

Okinawa Experience - sun, flowers and ocean

My recent trip to Okinawa in March was quite memorable as the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami happened on the day before our tour ended. Though Okinawa is far away from where it happened, we sensed the magnitude of the devastation as the tragedy unfolded on tv in our hotel room. The scenes on tv were heart wrenching.

We were staying at a seaside resort, Rizzan Sea Park Hotel on Tancha Bay, overlooking the East China Sea on that day. However, the sea appeared calm where we were when the Tsunami hit, sweeping away towns and people in the northeastern coast of Japan.

The weather in March was great at around 15 to 21 degree Celsius. We were on a guided tour organized by JTB on a chartered flight. The group was too big and lots of time wasted in waiting for members who did not keep to time schedule. Hence, we didn't have much time to spend at interesting spots such as the Churaumi Aquarium. i could have spent the whole day there just watching the huge variety of ocean life in the aquarium. The Churaumi Aquarium is located at the Ocean Expo Park.

As the weather was still cool, Azalea - the season's flower was not in full bloom yet. We only get to see some of the blooms, however, orchids were in abundance and our hotel and some restaurants were decorated with big orchids.

We also visited some of the world heritage sites in Okinawa, namely the Shuri Castle and Shikina-en, the picturesque Manzamo Cliff, Peace Memorial Park and Gyokusen Cave.

Afterthoughts: F1 night race

The first ever F1 night race was held in Singapore last evening.

i don't drive and am not even a fan of fast cars, as i believe that it's an expensive game for the rich and famous who have nothing more meaningful to do than to flaunt their wealth and to look glam.

i felt even more disgusted when i saw on tv how the organisers tried every means to block off any possible opening around the vicinity - covering overhead bridges and walkways with black cloth - to prevent the non-paying public from peeking even though tickets to the race were already sold out. What's the message they're trying to send to the ordinary folks? This is an exclusive event for the rich and famous only.

With an open mind, i watched the race on tv last evening and was truly amazed by how events were unfolded throughout the race. What the race truly offers is more than the thrill...it's a lesson in life. Life is full of surprises. If one is qualified as the best early in life and have a headstart over his/her peers, there's no guarantee that one will be successful all the time in life; conversely, if one has not achieved much early in life, you're not down and out yet. This event highlights to us how our school kids are stressed out early in life to achieve a good start by getting into good ranking schools that have all the resources to groom them. As a result, the slow developers are placed in a disadvantaged position. However, there's a ray of hope for them if the result of last night's race is to be replayed in the lives of many kids, their future may not be that dim.

In this past week, people were besieged by two crises - the financial meltdown in USA, which spread across world markets within hours and the toxic food scare that originated in China but affected many countries which import contaminated milk products from them. (latest news: nearly 53,000 babies are sick)

Incidentally, both finance and food are words starting with the letter F.

There's another thing in common, both instances were the result of man's greed at play.

According to wiktionary.org, Greed is: A selfish or excessive desire for or pursuit of more than is needed or deserved, especially of money, wealth, food, or other possessions.

Misinterpretation

The plight of not understanding the most popular dialect (Hokkien) in Singapore...

Read news report in Zaobao of a Hokkien speaking man who was acquitted in court for allegation of defamation by a police officer. He appealed to a 3-month sentence passed last year for threatening her in Hokkien "wah soot hor yi see", which literally means that "i will shoot (sue) her to death". In actual fact, he meant that he would "sue her till she loses her job" for wrongfully detaining him in the police station. He claimed that he was innocent.

The police officer probably misunderstood the meaning of the phrase and thought that he literally meant to kill her.

Hokkien 福建话 is a colorful language and has evolved in Singapore with the peppering of English and Malay words. 'soot' or 'shoot' is the transliteration of the English word 'sue'. Given the context, i wonder if a Taiwanese would understand the phrase, as Minnan hua 闽南话is also quite different from our brand of Hokkien.

On the other hand, our English or Singlish is also peppered with Malay and Hokkien words.

Southern Ridges (Part 2)

i continued exploring the Southern Ridges this morning. Again, my starting point is the Henderson Waves. Oh, i need to correct my earlier post in which i said that there's less than 100 stairs from Henderson Rd up to Henderson Waves. It actually consists of more than 100 steps - i counted 103 this morning. My friend was right.

i took the link to Mt Faber Park and then from Faber Point, i walked all the way down* Marang Trail to the foothill of Mt Faber at Marang Rd, next to Harbour Front MRT Station (Exit D).

The only interesting view i found was up at Mt Faber - i enjoyed the panaromic view of Singapore's coastal area in the south. The Marang Trail was a little disappointing to me, as compared with the forest walk from Henderson Hill Park to Alexandra Arch, which offers much more to see. It took me less than an hour walk to reach Harbour Front.

*Note: For those who are physically less fit, like me, it will be a challenge to walk from the opposite direction - it's an uphill climb starting from Marang Rd to Mt Faber.

Southern Ridges Walk - Part 1

From Henderson Waves to Alexandra Arch

Yesterday was my first 'venture' into the Southern Ridges. i took a bus early in the morning to Henderson Rd and climbed up the stairs from the bus stop to Henderson Waves (~62.71m above sea level and 0.3km across) which connects Mt Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park across Henderson Rd. The climb wasn't as difficult as my friend had told me. i didn't count the steps but reckon there're definitely less then 100 steps that she had told me.

i decided to continue my walk towards Alexandra Arch, taking the elevated walkway from Telok Blangah Hill Park towards the west. The weather was nice and it was an easy walk, as my friend had told me that walking westward is downward sloping. Along the way, there were more and more people walking from west to east, i was among the minority who took the east-west direction. By the time i arrived at Alexandra Arch, there was already a big crowd at Hortpark, a gathering point for groups. It took me 75 minutes to complete the stretch with a detour to the restroom at Telok Blangah Hill Park and the Terrace Gardens.

On the whole, it's a pleasant walk away from the urban noise and dust, lush vegetation and beautiful trees to feast your eyes and ease your mind.

KUALA LUMPUR- ALL it takes is one fruit or 100ml of its juice and the ordinarily harmless star fruit becomes poison in a matter of hours for kidney patients.
University Malaya Medical Centre consultant nephrologist Prof Dr Tan Si Yen said this was what had happened to Tang Gon Seang in China.

'Star fruits contain a neurotoxin which is not present in other fruits. It affects the brain and nerves. In healthy persons, the kidneys filter it out. In kidney patients, it cannot be removed and worsens their condition,' Dr Tan said.

Hurray! after many days of rain and chilly temperature (by Singapore's standard), we finally have some sunshine today, amidst slight drizzle this afternoon. The temperature has climbed a few degrees higher from a recorded low of 21.8 deg C last night to 31 deg C this afternoon.

According to reports, the average temperature this month has dipped to a 74-year low of 25.6 deg C. The coldest March was in 1934, when mean temperatures was 25 deg C. The current wet weather is due to a strong La Nina effect over the Pacific Ocean.

Shojin-ryori (精进料理) is a type of vegetarian cooking introduced into Japan together with Buddhism in the 6th century. Shojin is a Buddhist term that refers to asceticism in pursuit of enlightenment, and ryori means "cooking." In the 13th century, with the advent of the Zen sect of Buddhism, the custom of eating shojin ryori spread. Foods derived from soybeans - including 'tofu' - and vegetable oils - including sesame, walnut, and rapeseed - were popularized in Japan as a result of their use in shojin ryori. Yesterday, i saw this tiny Japanese scroll on display at a cosy Japanese restaurant (Goto Restaurant) at Ann Siang Rd.

We (me and my Ikebana course mates) were there for a simple graduation ceremony with our teacher, Tomoko san who presented us our licences and membership handbook (written in ancient Japanese which i don't understand). This reminds me that i have been procrastinating on picking up my Japanese again since i gave up learning half-way many years ago when i was working in a Japanese bank. A terrarium is a miniature garden created in an enclosed or semi-enclosed glass container. It is a substitute for flat-dwellers who like gardening but do not have a garden at home, especially in land-scarce Singapore.

Yesterday, my friend Junko took me to the Open House Tea Ceremony at the Japanese Association of Singapore. The turn-out was pretty good and we were treated with authentic Japanese tea and sweets. Sado or "the way of tea" is the Japanese term for tea ceremony, it is ceremonially prepared by a skilled practitioner and served to a small group of guests in a tranquil setting - a tatami room with tokonoma (a wall niche with flower arrangement and scroll).

The Japanese tea ceremony is an elaborate process of rituals. The principles of harmony (和, wa), respect (敬, kei), purity (清, sei), and tranquility (寂, jaku) - are central to the tea ceremony. Extreme care and attention is being paid to the way tea is prepared and the materials and utensils used as well as the room setting.
